How to choose a free posture analysis app for Android, with 17 apps compared

Choose a free posture analysis app by what its free version includes: whether "free" means no purchases at all, a free tier or a trial, how many photos and views it needs, and whether you can export the report. On October 8, 2026 we checked 17 photo-based posture apps on Google Play against these and five other criteria. Six list no in-app purchases. One of them, PoseAlign, is our app. We did not test any app's accuracy.

Every app here measures posture from still photos of your body. Posture reminders, wearables, webcam monitors and exercise-only programs are left out; if you are weighing those against a photo app, see photo, webcam or wearable posture checkers. How the list was built is explained at the end.

The 17 apps against eight criteria

The tables are grouped by price model and sorted alphabetically within each group. The order is not a ranking. "Not stated" means the Google Play listing and the developer's website do not say; the app may still have the feature. "Android" alone means we did not find the app on the US App Store.

APECS, PhysioCode and PhysioMaster are built for practitioners. With PostureScreen Lite below, they are the only apps in the list that say you can place or move points yourself, and the only ones with published studies. Each study is small and tested specific measures, so it shows the method can be repeatable under the study's conditions, not that every number in the app is accurate.

PostureScreen's research applies to the iOS app: two small studies in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science tested rater reliability of PostureScreen Mobile on an iPad, with 10 and 20 young adults. Neither tested the Android version, which its own listing describes as "not compatible with our iOS version" and limited to "posture assessment without computer vision". The Android listing still quotes the study results.

What "free" means on a posture app listing

Google Play shows "Free" for every app above except PostureScreen Lite. Behind that label are five different models:

  • Free with no purchases. No plan, subscription or in-app purchase. The listing has no "In-app purchases" label under the app name.
  • Free tier plus paid upgrades. The core check stays free and extra modules cost money. APECS spells out what each plan includes; PhysioCode and Posture Guy say only that paid plans add more.
  • Scan limit. You can scan a few times, then pay. Posture Fix - Streching & Ai says Premium unlocks "unlimited scans" without saying how many free scans you get. ePose, a Japanese service for clinics, states 5 analyses a month on its free plan.
  • Trial, then subscription. Free to install, but scanning needs a subscription once a few days run out: 7 days for Vertebro, 3 for Posturato. Vertebro's listing adds that subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the period ends.
  • Not described. Pose Pro, PhysioMaster and Spine sell in-app purchases without saying what the free version includes. The only way to find out is to install the app.

If you plan to check your posture once a month, a weekly subscription costs far more per check than it looks. The price range under "In-app purchases" on the listing, such as "$4.99 - $99.99 per item", is the quickest sign that a free download will ask for money.

The other criteria, and why they matter

Photos and views

One side photo shows how far your head and shoulders sit forward, but it cannot show left-right differences such as shoulder level or knee alignment. Those need a front or back photo. Apps that use a front and a side photo cover both; four-view apps add the back and both sides.

One side photo shows forward head position; left-right differences such as shoulder level need a front or back photo.

Measurements

A 0–100 score is easy to follow but hard to check or share. Named measurements with units, such as a shoulder level in degrees, tell you what changed between two checks and give a physiotherapist something specific to look at. Posture Fix: Body Alignment shows each metric against a "normal range"; the listing does not say where those ranges come from.

PDF in the free version

A PDF lets you keep a check outside the app and show it to someone else. Some apps keep the report behind a plan: APECS reserves advanced PDF reports for Pro, and PostureScreen Lite offers report PDFs on subscription. The PoseAlign report page shows what its free PDF contains.

Manual landmark adjustment

Every number comes from points placed on the photo. If an app places them automatically and you cannot move them, a misplaced point, for example on a hip hidden by a loose shirt, goes straight into the result. Apps that let you place or drag points let you fix that. Where an app does not, look at the overlay before you trust the number.

Illustration: a point placed on loose clothing tilts the line between the hips; apps with manual adjustment let you move it back.

Published studies

A published reliability study tells you that a method gave similar results when repeated under the study's conditions, with that sample. It does not cover other phones, other users or measures the study did not test. APECS's developer lists more than 35 publications that used the app; the table links one study per app rather than every paper.

Privacy statement

Nine apps state that the analysis runs on the phone or that photos or results are not uploaded. PhysioCode states the opposite: assessments are saved in the cloud, which suits a clinic sharing records across devices. The rest do not say. Google Play's Data safety section, filled in by each developer, lists what data the app collects and shares; read it alongside the description.

Who each kind of app suits, and who it doesn't

You want to check your own posture on Android without paying

Start with the six apps that list no purchases, then filter by views and report. PoseAlign, OurPosture and Posture Check: Spine Analyzer use a front and a side view; Posture Fix: Body Alignment and Posture Screen: Spine Analysis use four. Only PoseAlign and Posture Screen: Spine Analysis mention a PDF. These apps don't suit you if you need a measure backed by a published study, because our search found no validation study for these six apps. How PoseAlign works shows its two-photo check step by step.

You assess clients as a physio, chiropractor or coach

Look at manual landmark adjustment, published studies and branded reports. APECS and PhysioCode have free starting plans; PostureScreen Lite does not. Free plans don't suit you if you need APECS's head-neck module or advanced PDF reports, which need Pro. PoseAlign vs APECS compares a personal check with a practitioner tool, and PostureScreen alternatives for Android covers what you give up by leaving PostureScreen.

You use an iPhone

PoseAlign is Android only. APECS, PhysioMaster, PosePro, Posture Fix - Streching & Ai, Posture Guy, Statura, Vertebro and Posturato also have iOS versions. PostureScreen Mobile on the US App Store costs $59.99 with 30 days of use, then $24.99 a month or $249 a year. iOS versions can differ from the Android ones, as PostureScreen shows, so read the App Store listing itself.

You want a score plus an exercise routine

Vertebro, Posturato, Statura, Spine, Posture Fix - Streching & Ai and Posture Guy are built around daily routines, and most charge for the routine, more scans or both. They don't suit you if you want named measurements to share, since most report a score. Compare the yearly price with how often you will scan.

You need range of motion or movement analysis

Still-photo apps cannot measure movement. APECS includes range of motion on its free plan and video on Pro Plus, PhysioCode lists video protocols for squats, jumps, gait and running, and PhysioMaster includes a goniometer and motion analysis.

How this guide was made

We built the list on October 8, 2026. We searched Google Play (US store, English) for "posture analysis" and "posture scan", and read the first page of Google results (US, English) for "free posture analysis app android". We kept Android apps on Google Play that analyze posture from still photos and are free to install, and left out reminder, wearable, webcam and exercise-only apps. Backed AI and Postureletics were left out because their listings do not say the assessment uses photos.

Every fact in the tables comes from the app's US Google Play listing or the developer's website, read that day. iOS availability comes from the US App Store, and studies from a PubMed search for each app's name. We did not test any app's accuracy or install the other apps to see what sits behind their paywalls. PoseAlign is our app.

One correction to the search results: Google's AI Overview and two of the top results describe PostureZone as a free Android app. Its Google Play listing returns a "not found" page and it has no US App Store page, so it is not in the tables.

Before you install

Open the store listing and check four things:

  1. Is there an "In-app purchases" label, and what price range does it show?
  2. Does the description mention a trial, a subscription, or "Pro unlocks scans"?
  3. How many photos does it need, and does that include a front view?
  4. Can the free version export a PDF or a report you can keep?

Whichever app you choose, the photo limits the result. Use the same distance, height, light and clothing each time, as set out in how to take front and side posture photos, and read how accurate photo posture analysis is before comparing two checks. None of these apps diagnoses a condition; if a result worries you or you have pain, take the report to a physiotherapist or doctor.
